Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. Reprint. No stated date c1970. Reprint. 173pp. including an introduction, index and 3 pages of black and white illustrations. Francis O'Neill (1848-1936) was born in Tralibane, County Cork, Ireland. He later emigrated to become a policeman in Chicago, where he rose through the ranks quickly, eventually succeeding Joseph Kipley as the Chief of Police from 1901 to 1905. He was a fluter, fiddler, and piper and was part of the vibrant Irish community in Chicago at the time. During his time as chief, O'Neill recruited many traditional Irish musicians into the police force, and also collected tunes from some of the major performers of the time. Following his retirement from the police force he devoted much of his energy to publishing the music he had collected. His 'The Dance Music of Ireland' was first published in 1907, and is sometimes called, "O'Neill's 1001" because of the number of tunes included. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with black titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and a small mark near the top of the spine edge of the front board. The corners and spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some faint foxing around the edge of the front free endpaper. There is no inscription.…
