A WWI memoir written by one of the commanding officers of the General Army Headquarters of the Russian Empire, Boris Sergeevskii (1883-1976). A nobleman, Sergeevskii graduated from the Imperial Military Academy in St. Petersburg in 1909. In 1914 at the start of WWI Sergeevskii was one of the commanding officers of the 22 Army Corps. Promoted in rank and decorated for bravery throughout WWI, Sergeevskii's memoir records his experiences as a commanding officer as well as his general opinions on the events of 1914. The epilogue of the memoir indicates that it was intended as the first of four volumes, the plans foiled by post-Revolutionary emigration first to Belgrade and later to the United States. During the Russian Civil War (1918-1922) Sergeevskii commanded White Army forces in the south of Russia, events that he described in another memoir "Otrechenie. 1917" (Renunciation), published in New York in 1969. A second edition of the present text was published as part of the series "A look into the past" in 2009. Very scarce in the trade.
