Frankrijk was de bondgenoot van de Republiek tegen Spanje.Abel Servien (15931659) was een invloedrijke Franse staatsman en diplomaat, benoemd tot markies van Sablé en Boisdauphin. Als vertrouweling van kardinaal Richelieu en Mazarin was hij een belangrijke onderhandelaar bij de Vrede van Westfalen (1648) en diende hij als superintendent van financiën (16531659) onder Lodewijk XIV.
