This book explores the rise of the German grapevine louse (Phylloxera vastatrix) and its subsequent spread across Europe, detailing the devastation it caused to vineyards and the groundbreaking scientific research undertaken to combat it. The author traces the louse's origins in North America, its accidental introduction to Europe in the mid-19th century, and the various methods employed to control its spread, including submerging vines, using chemical treatments, and grafting resistant American rootstocks onto European vines. The book also examines the economic and social impact of the louse on the wine industry and the resilience of winegrowers in the face of adversity. This meticulously researched work offers a comprehensive analysis of one of the most significant challenges faced by the viticulture industry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
