Hardcover. Condition: Good+. No Jacket. ;Blackshaw, Susan R. (illustrator). 2nd Edition. At the time, it filled a big gap in knowledge of Taiwan's birds. The fact that it is in English and Mandarin together, including pronunciation aids was a big factor in providing a tool for the people of Taiwan who were just then acquiring an appreciation for the wildlife around them. This title updates "A Guide to the birds of Taiwan" (Sereringhaus, Kang & Alexander, 1970). It increases the number of species (201 instead of 117 in earlier version) and introduces color paintings of 43 species on 8 color plates. xxiv + 8 plates + 222pp. Sheldon R. Severinghaus (1940-2015), spent most of his professional life in Asia, including nearly two decades of distinguished service to The Asia Foundation. Dr. Severinghaus joined The Asia Foundation in 1979, having previously taught English and French at Tunghai University in Taiwan. He served as the Foundation's representative in Taiwan from 1980 through 1987, a period marked by substantial political reforms, the development of a vibrant civil society, and the island's transition from a largely agricultural to an industrial economy. From 1990 to 1998, he directed The Asia Foundation's new Mongolia Program. Under his leadership, the Foundation supported Mongolia as it transitioned to a democracy and market economy. Dr. Severinghaus formed a wide network of partnerships that led to programs to develop the new Mongolian constitution, and the new parliament. Dr. Severinghaus was survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Lucia Liu Severinghaus, whom he met while at Tunghai University. Dr. Severinghaus studied at Cornell University, earning his PhD in 1977. Both he and his wife received their PhD's in natural resources conservation at Cornell. Over the years, they went on numerous bird watching expeditions, often to remote parts of the world.
