Pamphlet. Condition: VERY GOOD. London, Printed and Sold by H. Hills, undated, (but probably 1706), 16 pp. (16mo) 7x4.25" (17.9x11.3 cm), disbound. The paper is slightly browned, no markings, no damages. Paper repair to spine, toning or staining at edges; very good. The first London edition, after the New York printing of 1706.…Lady Cornbury was the wife of Edward Hyde, (Edward Lord Viscount Cornbury) Captain General and Governor of New York and New Jersey. --- --- Sharp was chaplain to the Queen's forces in the province of New York. Felcone indicates that he was in America as early as 1702, and preached several times in New Jersey. Lady Cornbury, who died at the age of 34, was considered to be a woman of some means and class but did not appear to have the best taste in husbands. While her husband was made governor of New York and New Jersey, he seems to have spent most of his time pursuing personal gain. Queen Ann, his first cousin, dismissed him in 1708. Felcone reports that a portrait of him in the New York Historical Society shows him wearing women's clothing. Felcone 241. Sabin 79840.
