Paperback. Condition: New. Tracing the troubled roots of American capitalism and imperialism Coedited by noted Masters scholar, Jason Stacy, and his class, "Editing History," this annotated edition of Edgar Lee Masters's The New Star Chamber and Other Essays reappears at a perilous time in US history, when large corporations and… overseas conflicts once again threaten the integrity of American rights and liberties, and the United States still finds itself beholden to corporate power and the legacy of imperial hubris. In speaking to his times, Masters also speaks to ours. These thirteen essays lay bare the political ideology that informed Spoon River Anthology. Masters argues that the dangerous imperialism championed by then-President Theodore Roosevelt was rooted in the Constitution itself. By debating the ethics of the Philippine-American War, criticizing Hamiltonian centralization of government, and extolling the virtues of Jeffersonian individualism, Masters elucidates the ways in which America had strayed from its constitutional morals and from democracy itself. The result is a compelling critique of corporate capitalism and burgeoning American imperialism, as well as an exemplary source for understanding its complicated author in the midst of his transformation from urban lawyer to poet of rural America. In print again for the first time since 1904, this edition includes an introduction and historical annotations throughout. Edited and annotated by students at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and designed and illustrated by students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, this volume traces economic and political pathologies to the origins of the American republic. The New Star Chamber and Other Essays is as vital now as it was over 100 years ago.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. IN OUR CARIB INDIAN VILLAGE, written by Faustulus Joseph Fredericks with Elizabeth Shepherd, illustrated by Faustulus Joseph Fredericks and Mas Clem Frederick, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, stated first printing, 1971. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block… and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book, but remainder marks are on the top and bottom edges. The green cloth boards are in near fine condition. The dust jacket is in good condition (chipping along top edges, especially at spine; blue circular tag affixed to front cover; age toning inside). 9 ½ x 6 ¾, 96 pages, 12 ounces XX [From the dust jacket flaps] The author of this book is a Carib Indian boy living on the island of Dominica. With the help of writer Elizabeth Shepherd, he tells how his people fish and farm just as they did when Columbus discovered the island in 1493. Drawings by Faustulus and his brother Mas Clem vividly convey the Caribs' way of life—the food they eat, the games they play, the ancient way of making the canoes that take them past the breakers to fish. Diagrams and directions are given for making the kind of "finger-catcher" that Carib children play with. With her husband and two young children, Elizabeth Shepherd stayed with Faustulus and his family on the Carib Reserve and had a unique opportunity to become acquainted with this small but sturdy group of people. An introductory section by Mrs. Shepherd gives the historical background and fascinating sociological context for this glimpse into the lives of a little-known and isolated people. XX FAUSTULUS JOSEPH FREDERICK lives with his mother and father, grandfather, and brothers on the Carib Reserve on the island of Dominica, where Elizabeth Shepherd visited him with her husband and two young children. Mrs. Shepherd, a graduate of Milton Academy and Bryn Mawr College, is a former elementary, junior high, and high school teacher. She has also been a writer and editor of scientific articles for a children's encyclopedia. Her interest in anthropology led to a meeting with Faustulus after she had seen his drawings and those of his brother, Mas Clem, which she feels have much to tell us about the daily life of a people almost untouched by modern technology. An enthusiastic amateur naturalist, Mrs. Shepherd is the author of Jellyfishes, in addition to her book about the Pygmies of the Congo, In a Pygmy Camp. XX NOTE: the history of Dominica's Carib Reserve is described in a Wikipedia entry titled Kalinago Territory. Frederick, Faustulus Joseph; Mas Clem Frederick (illustrator).
