Tras graduarse en la Universidad de Chicago, dedicó su carrera al estudio de la Literatura Española contemporánea y es autor de un notable libro THE NOVELS OF PEREZ GALDOS. El presente libro aporta una contribución notabilísima y muy necesaria al estudio de la novela española del pasado siglo y del actual. En efecto, el profesor Eoff adopta un punto de vista que no es usual en nuestra crítica literaria y que puede tal vez orientarla en gran parte. No se propone un nuevo análisis formal de las obras que estudia, ni tampoco determinar su contexto histórico, sino iluminar las ideas que yacen en su trasfondo. Es cosa sabida de todo el mundo que la novela europea ha sido un vehículo de expresión ideológica muy activo e influyente.
