Original publisher's tan printed paper wrappers. 20.5 × 14.5 cm. First WWII Kraków edition of selected poetry from Kobzar by Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861), the foundational poet of modern Ukrainian literature. Issued in 1940 as the inaugural volume (No. 1) of the Literaturna Biblioteka series by Ukraiins'ke Vydavnytstvo (Ukrainian Publishing House)-the primary Ukrainian publishing institution active in the Nazi-occupied General Government during World War II-this slender volume brought Shevchenko's patriotic and lyric verse to Ukrainian refugees and community members displaced across war-torn Central Europe. The original printed cover features a woodcut-style oval portrait of Shevchenko framed by a decorative vine border signed in the lower corners ("? ."), complemented by a traditional frontispiece illustration of an itinerant kobzar minstrel. The title page features the "Selfreliance Association of American Ukrainians, Branch in New York, 85 Second Ave., New York" stamp, accompanied by a matching manuscript inventory notation "1770" in pen on the title page and on a small paper label affixed to the upper-left corner of the front wrapper. Original publisher's tan paper wrappers printed in dark black. Wrappers with age-toning and soft wear along edges; light chipping to spine and along the edges.
