Signed
Probable Taiwan pirate edition INSCRIBED, DATED, AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. [2], 176 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 13.25cm. White dust jacket soiled; chipping at top edges; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Burgundy cloth with vibrant silver stamped lettering to spine. Sewn-in yellow silk ribbon page marker a bit frayed at its terminal edges. Endpapers toned; old pencil note (past bookseller's marking?) at rear free endpaper verso's top left; author's eight-line ink inscription "Best wishes to the | Shukla girls + especially | the Shukla Boy. | Cordially | SI Hsiung | Washington D.C. | 1984 | [red ink Chinese character stamp]" on front free endpaper; interior leaves are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Interior leaves are rather thin stock paper which is typical for English-language Taiwanese pirate editions from the 1960s-1970s. Acquired from the estate of Professor Shaligram Shukla (1940-2022) who earned his Ph.D. at Cornell and taught at Georgetown University's Department of Linguistics for fifty years beginning in 1967. OCLC locates copies of a 1950 London edition by Hutchinson & Co. and a 1986 Singapore edition by Graham Brash; although OCLC cites a 1972 Taipei edition there are no listed institutional holdings, i.e. a bibliographical ghost which might well be represented by this copy.
