Master Hua was born in Shuangcheng, Heilongjiang, China and became a monk at the age of 19, studying and practicing in various temples throughout China. In 1949, he founded a Buddhist association in Manchuria and later established the Buddhist Lecture Hall in San Francisco, California in 1962. In 1976, he founded the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, which has become one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in the Western Hemisphere. Master Hua was known for his efforts to promote Buddhism in the West and his dedication to the practice of the Dharma, or Buddhist teachings. He taught extensively on Buddhist scriptures, meditation, and moral conduct, and was known for his compassionate and accessible approach to teaching the Dharma.
