Add to basketAnd newly Englished, for the satisfaction of all that desire to look into the Turkish Vanities. To which is prefixed, the life of Mahomet, the prophet of the Turks, and author of the Alcoran. With A needful caveat, or admonition, for them who desire to know what use may be made of, or if there be danger in reading the Alcoran. London: printed, and are to be sold by Randal Taylor, near Stationers Hall, 1688 [28],xviii,[24],511pp. Comprising: the title page, blank, 'The Translator to the Christian Reader,' 'A Table,' 'The French Epistle to the Reader,' The statement of the consuls of Marseilles, blank, A letter to 'Mr. du Ryer' from the consuls of Marseilles, 'A Translation of the Command of the Grand Seignior concerning Mr. Malezair.' 'The Life and Death of Mahomet,' 'A Needful Caveat or Admonition for them who desire to know what use may be made of, or if there be danger in reading the Alcoran: By Alexander Ross.' followed by 'The Alcoran of Mahomet.' The eight page 'Table' of chapters has been bound before 'The French Epistle to the Reader' instead of before the main body. The earliest English translation of the Qur'an was The 'Alcoran of Mahomet' in 1649 by Alexander Ross, chaplain to King Charles I. This was a translation from the French L'Alcoran de Mahomet by du Ryer, but containing Ross's 'Needful Caveat.' Andre Du Ryer was French vice-consul in Egypt from 1623 to 1626, and both as adviser and interpreter to the French ambassador in Istanbul and ambassador extraordinary of the sultan to France in the early 1630s, he assembled a fine collection of Turkish, Persian, and Arabic manuscripts most of which are now in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. In 1634 he published a translation of Saadi's Gulistan, and later translated the Qur'an into French, first published in 1647. Neither the publishers nor the clerical (and civil) authorities were in favor of publishing the Qur'an in the vernacular. Du Ryer feared a hostile reception of his work and thus included anti-Islamic invective in his preface. His achievement was so popular that many of the later translations (including this edition) of the Qur'an into European languages relied on his text. Encased in a later dark brown half calf with brown cloth boards and a red leather label, near or contemporary signature of John ffox, Apothecary, to the head of title and following recto, further signature of ?G. Chatham to the head of title, title page printed a little skewed from the vertical, some ink-marks and browning to the title, a very good fresh copy.
