The records cover a tumultuous period in English history, following the Black Death and during the reign of King Edward III. The period was marked by social and economic upheaval that often manifested in legal disputes and criminal activity recorded in these documents. H[elen] M[aud] Cam, [1885-1968], was a notable English historian and the first woman to be appointed a tenured professor at Harvard University. Cam's focus was on local administration, as opposed to the constitutional and legal history of the dominant historians of the age, Stubbs and Maitland. Though an admirer of both, she greatly expanded on and revised the work of these men. Her work was of great scholarly value, but she was also able to write successfully for a wider audience, illustrated best by her England before Elizabeth (1950).
