Mit zunehmender Verbreitung der Informationsverarbeitung werden die Anwendungen ständig komplexer, und die sogenannte Software-Krise" wird immer deutlicher sichtbar. Die Lösung der damit verbundenen Probleme in Anwendungsentwicklung und -Wartung verlangt nach einer Unterstützung durch den Computer: Für diesen Zweck werden CASE-Tools eingesetzt. Ausgehend von einer Situationsanalyse des Software-Engineering werden verschiedene Konzeptklassen (Einflüsse auf Werkzeug-Schnittstellen, Auswirkungen neuer Hardware- und Software-Technologien) zunächst auf abstraktem Niveau beschrieben. Es wird auch diskutiert, wo innerhalb dieser Konzeptklassen Schwierigkeiten bestehen und wie diese zu lösen sind. An verschiedenen Stellen wird gezeigt, wie man diese Konzeptklassen anwenden kann, um die Software-Krise" zu überwinden. Für das bisher bestehende Defizit in der Theorie von CASE-Tools werden verschiedene globale Werkzeug-Modelle, abstrakte Elementarfunktionsschichten, Werkzeug-Charakteristika und eine ideale Werkzeug-Architektur nicht nur diskutiert, sondern auch Lösungsvorschläge für deren Realisierung angeboten. Dabei werden Prinzipien des Software-Engineering wie Abstraktion, Hierarchisierung, schrittweise Verfeinerung und Modularisierung eingesetzt, um die in der Realität vorhandene Komplexität zu reduzieren. Zur mehrdimensionalen Klassifizierung von CASE-Tools können die vorgeschlagenen abstrakten Werkzeug-Modelle, die Basis-Werkzeuge und die Werkzeug-Kombinationen verwendet werden. Anhand einer Bestandsaufnahme der Funktionsweise gängiger CASE-Tools werden Anforderungen und Lösungskonzepte für eine evolutionäre Weiterentwicklung vorgeschlagen. Dabei stand der Gedanke der Integration der bereits diskutierten Konzeptklassen sowohl in die Daten und Funktionen als auch in die Methoden des jeweiligen CASE-Tools im Vordergrund. Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Arbeit sind Anforderungen zur Weiterentwicklung bestehender CASE-Tools, eine integrative CASE-Strategie in Form eines Vorgehensmodells, ein Ansatz zur Wiederverwendung von CASE-Funktionen über abstrakte Elementarfunktionen und eine Basis-Architektur für ein ideales CASE-Tool sowie ein Architektur-Konzept für eine ideale Werkzeug-Kombination.
