FIRST EDITION. Variously rather toned and foxed; pp. 88, 8vo; contemporary full smooth calf, ruled gilt and blind, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands and red label; some marks to the boards and joints rubbed, but good; blind ownership stamp to title of Mark Pattison (1813-84), Rector of Lincoln College Oxford; and later ownership inscription: 'B. Leggett 1901'. Very scarce. The first complete edition of fragments attributed to the Cycladean poet and satirist of the 7th century BCE Simonides of Amorgos. Although regularly confused with that other island poet Simonides of Ceos, Simonides of Amorgos has become a standard in discussions of the relative misogyny of ancient Greece, owing to his now-infamous satirical account of the 'different types' of women. Complied with analysis and full scholarly apparatus by German philologist Friedrich Welcker (1784-1868), who was awarded a chair at the new University of Bonn in 1816, where he established the art museum and the library. He published simultaneously in Rheinisches Museum für Philologie (vol. 3, 1835, p. 353 ff.) and in this separate edition. Of this, WorldCat lists just 4 copies in France, 2 in Germany and 1 in the UK (at St Andrews). While the institutional scarcity is explained by subscriptions to the Museum's journal, there are just two auction records, both predating WW1.
