À Strasbourg, il obtient de Philippe de Hesse la charge d'historien de la ligue de Smalkalde, et rédige son histoire de la Réforme « De statu religionis » publié pour la première fois à Strasbourg, qui est une source majeure de l'histoire de la Réforme. Il poursuit parallèlement son activité de diplomate et participe en décembre 1545 à l'ambassade française auprès d' Henri VIII. Il représente la ville de Strasbourg au Concile de Trente en 1551.
