Cloth. Condition: Very Good. George Cruikshank (illustrator). The story of the life of a private pupil, which was based on francis Smedley's own experiences. Francis Edward Smedley (1818-1864) was an English Novelist. After an illness in his infancy his growth was restricted and his spine malformed, therefore had no use of his legs. He was educated at home until the age of fourteen, then he spent a few months as a private pupil with the reverend Charles Millet, an experience which provided him with material for his book Scenes from the Life of a Private Pupil. His first essay proved so successful that it was expanded into Frank Fairlegh, and published in book-form in 1850. The Binding is tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping, discolouration to the spine and boards. Internally the pages are clean and bright with browning on the first and last couple of pages only, and the occasional scattered spot. There is a closed tear measuring approx 30mm to the front free endpaper. Very Good. book.
