Original green cloth, gilt title and series name to spine, top-edge gilt. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, spine ends and corners bumped. Light toning to interior, owner signatures to front free endpaper ("Russell" and "Scott Moncrieff Penney"), leaflet advertising the Notable Scottish Trials Series laid in. $150. * First edition. This was the first title issued in the Notable Scottish Trials Series. Smith, a socialite, was tried before the High Court of Justiciary Edinburgh, 1857, for the murder of Pierre Emile L'Angelier and acquitted. Her trial was the basis for a play by Letty Lynton and Dishonered Lady, a movie starring Joan Crawford.
