Presumed first edition (no direct statement provided). xvi, 388 pages. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 16cm. No dust jacket (likely as issued). Dark red cloth rubbed; two black ink stains on front board; light fading to spine with small cloth losses at frayed ends; spine's gilt stamping still fairly bright; slight wear at boards' fore-edge corners; slender tearing and cloth loss at rear board's top right corner adjacent to spine (red cloth is one of at least two binding variants with their respective priority unknown). Text block edges toned; foxing to top edge as well. Endpapers toned; some scattered light soiling and foxing to interior leaves with strongest foxing occurring on pages adjacent to the book's plates. Binding stressed between various quires but holding. Includes eight tables, thirty plates (twenty single image b/w plates, seven double b/w image plates, 1 b/w map, and two two-page state color maps -"Geological and Artesian Water Map of Alabama as frontispiece and "Map of Alabama Showing Approximately the Artesian Systems"), and twenty-three figures (some of which are small b/w maps as well). With essay "Climate of Alabama" by Frank P. Chaffee on pages 25-31. {AL-Shelf#2}.

Black cloth with some mottling and fading/sunning; some flaking loss to spine's otherwise still fairly bright gilt stamping (black cloth is one of at least two binding variants with their respective priority unknown). Text block edges toned. Some foxing and toning to interior leaves occurring mostly on pages adjacent to the book's plates; a few scattered instances of fingerprint soiling and a few creased corners; interior pages overall remain clean. Binding slightly stressed between pages ii-ii but otherwise firm. Front cover and title leaf detached; edge-worn front cover has pencil signature of W.C. Morse and other pencil notations and college department stamp; pencil margin marks on page 290. Pencil date and ink notation on title page. Spine paper chipped and worn. Pages 757-758 detached and edge-worn with chip at bottom spine corner. B/w plates and illustrations, several foldouts. Prominent academic and geologist William Clifford Morse (1874-1962) taught at Mississippi State University from 1918-1934 and at University of Mississippi from 1934-1958 and also served as Director of the Mississippi Geological Survey.
