Lewis Ziegler on the front free endpaper. Lt. col. Henry "Jullundur" Smith, served in the Indian Medical Service, mostly in Jullundur, Punjab. In 1905 he published a landmark paper titled "Extraction of cataract in the capsule". Smith's operation, an operation for removing cataracts with the capsule intact, is named for him. S. Lewis Ziegler invented the "Ziegler Knife", a specialized device that ophthalmologic surgeons use to perform incisions on the iris or other adnexal tissues within the anterior chamber.

All volumes show minor soiling to cloth and slight rubbing to extremities, with text block edges typically a bit tanned by age, mild rubbing to portions of edges. Vol. VIII is minimally ex-library, with call label on lower spine, F&M College (Gift of B. F. Fackenthal, Jr.) book plate mounted inside front cover. Vol. VIII shows minor loss (nibbling?) at top corner through most of text block, not affecting any text, this copy thus Good only, the set overall VG. Firm bindings, clean interiors. He was one of the few who was given a favourable press at the time. Chapter XVI is entitled 'Of the Ripper and His Deeds - And of the Criminal Investigator, Sir Robert Anderson'. An important Ripper associated book, and one of the rarest. One Portrait Frontis. with printed signature and tissue-guard. 237pp. lge. 8vo. h/back. Original red cloth with gilt lettering to fr. cover and sp. titles. Teg, uncut edges, Unfortunately, this scarce book has sustained water damage to pretty much all of the pages (the image looks worse than it actually is). It's mostly to the page margins, leaving the text unaffected. The covers have also been affected, but is almost imperceptible being confined mostly to the lower quarter. The tail of the sp. has also been damaged (see image). There is an embossed 'Presentation Copy' stamp to the top right-hand corner of the tp. Still an acceptable copy of an extremely rare police memoir. A fairly heavy book which will require additional postage if shipped overseas. G. only.
