Even the name proclaimed a rich and rare heritage. Tall and lean, with the patrician good looks and aristocratic carriage that only good lineage and great wealth bestow, he was a man quite unlike most others. He was born into two of the wealthiest families in America - the Vanderbilts and the Whitneys - in the final days of the 1800s, when enormous fortunes meant enormous mansions and plentiful servants, weekends at one of the country houses, boarding schools, poli and tennis instruction, Ivy League educations, and summers in Newport or Europe. And he lived his life in unapologetic exemplification of an era gone by. He leveraged his name and his birthright into decades of adventure, accomplishment, and approbation while others of similar circumstances lived rather more idle lives. In fact, as Quest magazine pointed out in a 1984 article, his resume read like that of "a national folk hero." He inherited millions while still in his thirties, but long before then he had proven himself a man of uncommon entrepreneurial acumen, earning his first half million with a craftly land deal in Mexico when he was only twenty-six. But removed from public view, there were crevices and crannies of his character and soul known to only a few, paradoxes and quirks that make him far more interesting than mere wealth and stature. [He] was described by Quest magazine as "by far the most fascinating, complex, confusing, and controversial Whitney." Indeed, much of what he did defied not only stereotype, but any fixed linear pattern. With all his interests, he structured his live with an orderliness not unlike that of a blue collar worker who takes comfort in the predictability of the schedules and rules he lives by. Whitney had rules and principles for everything from meal taking (large breakfast, medium-sized lunch, and small dinner, at precisely the same time every day) to keeping young in old age (always innovating, never looking back). And he was quite inflexible about abridging them. he despised facial hair on men and could not abide spoiled rich kids. And he was profounjdly patriotic, flying teh American flag every day at each one of his homes and diligently paying ever y cent of taxes he owed. "I resent some of my very good friends who are very rich and have found ways to avoid paying income taxes," he would declare. "I will never find a shortcut. I am pround to pay my income taxes because I'm proud to be an American.". "He was just your basic good man," said Linda Toohey, who met him in the 1970s when she became publisher of the Saratogian and was a regular in the Whitney orbit. "He really lived the life of a religious, spiritual, ethical, well-meaning human. For a man who had seen virtually all the wonders of the world, he was always happiest in simple places and smaller groups."
