Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The impetus for writing Good Psychiatric Management andDialectical Behavior Therapy: A Clinician's Guide to Integration andStepped Care was the realization that the availability ofspecialized care for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is faroutstripped by the number of patients who need…treatment. This manual, edited by experts on BPD, provides a framework for implementing a steppedcare model in settings where access to specialized treatments is limited. The authors contend that the principles of good psychiatric management (GPM)represent a basic foundation that all clinicians can learn and that combinedwith dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), one of the most effective newertreatment modalities, progress can indeed be realized. The book prioritizespragmatism by suggesting what works in terms of reasonable evidence, practical allocation of public health resources, and real-world clinicalexperience implementing evidence-based treatments for BPD.The book isstructured to enhance understanding and the acquisition of basic skills: An introductory chapter delivers a brief overview of both GPM andDBT, explaining in broad strokes how BPD is conceptualized in each model.Later chapters address the common principles found in both GPM andDBTprinciples that any generalist clinician can incorporate into theirpractice, including clinician stance, treatment organization, and a strategyfor managing crises. The stepped care model for BPD, is introduced andexplored, with emphasis on clinical stage and available resources. Inaddition, the book presents a menu of possible ways clinicians and programscan use GPM, DBT, and other specialist psychotherapy for BPD. Two toolkits are supplied, one each for GPM and DBT. These tool kits summarize thetop skills and techniques in both treatment modalities for clinicians whoare interested in using them in their practices. A full set of caseillustrations is included, each depicting the application of DBT and GPM incommon clinical scenarios. These vignettes demonstrate how DBT and GPM canbe integrated into primary care settings, emergency rooms, and generalmental health settings where specialized psychotherapies for BPD are eithernot available or not well suited. Aimed at general psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, mental health nurses, psychiatry residents, family physicians, psychologists, and other mental health clinicians whopractice in communities where evidence-based treatments for BPD aredifficult to access, Good Psychiatric Management and Dialectical BehaviorTherapy enhances the clinician's ability to provide not only treatment butalso hope. Presents a unique approach to treating borderline personality disorder (BPD). The approach, known as good psychiatric management (GPM), requires minimal training, is flexible, and is feasible for generalists to learn and use. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. As new condition forest green boards with gold spine lettering. Includes Dedication; List of Other Books by Jeffrey Rodengen; Foreword by Marylou Whitney; Acknowledgments; Introduction; Epilogue; Significant Events in the Life of C.V. "Sonny" Whitney; Notes to Sources; and Index. Signed… by the author, Jeffrey L. Rodengen, with thick blue marker on the half title page. "Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney. Even the name proclaimed a rich and rare heritage. Tall and lean, with the patrician good looks and aristocratic carriage that only good lineage and great wealth bestow, he was a man quite unlike most others. He was born into two of the wealthiest families in America - the Vanderbilts and the Whitneys - in the final days of the 1800s, when enormous fortunes meant enormous mansions and plentiful servants, weekends at one of the country houses, boarding schools, poli and tennis instruction, Ivy League educations, and summers in Newport or Europe. And he lived his life in unapologetic exemplification of an era gone by. He leveraged his name and his birthright into decades of adventure, accomplishment, and approbation while others of similar circumstances lived rather more idle lives. In fact, as Quest magazine pointed out in a 1984 article, his resume read like that of "a national folk hero." He inherited millions while still in his thirties, but long before then he had proven himself a man of uncommon entrepreneurial acumen, earning his first half million with a craftly land deal in Mexico when he was only twenty-six. But removed from public view, there were crevices and crannies of his character and soul known to only a few, paradoxes and quirks that make him far more interesting than mere wealth and stature. [He] was described by Quest magazine as "by far the most fascinating, complex, confusing, and controversial Whitney." Indeed, much of what he did defied not only stereotype, but any fixed linear pattern. With all his interests, he structured his live with an orderliness not unlike that of a blue collar worker who takes comfort in the predictability of the schedules and rules he lives by. Whitney had rules and principles for everything from meal taking (large breakfast, medium-sized lunch, and small dinner, at precisely the same time every day) to keeping young in old age (always innovating, never looking back). And he was quite inflexible about abridging them. he despised facial hair on men and could not abide spoiled rich kids. And he was profounjdly patriotic, flying teh American flag every day at each one of his homes and diligently paying ever y cent of taxes he owed. "I resent some of my very good friends who are very rich and have found ways to avoid paying income taxes," he would declare. "I will never find a shortcut. I am pround to pay my income taxes because I'm proud to be an American.". "He was just your basic good man," said Linda Toohey, who met him in the 1970s when she became publisher of the Saratogian and was a regular in the Whitney orbit. "He really lived the life of a religious, spiritual, ethical, well-meaning human. For a man who had seen virtually all the wonders of the world, he was always happiest in simple places and smaller groups." "He was a great believer in Christ but also read the Old Testament," said Marylou [Whitney]. "He said his prayers every night, and each night we used to take turns reading to each other from the Bible before turning off the lights." - short excerpt from the Introduction. Apolinario, Jill (designe and layout); Sonley, Rachelle (design and layout); Shockley, Dennis (design and layout) (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).
