Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the effects of two variables on the storage life of Marsh grapefruit: nitrogen and potash fertilization and temperature. The book begins by reviewing previous research on grapefruit storage. The author found that pitting and decay were more prevalent in grapefruit stored at 40°F or lower, while those stored at 50°F had less pitting but more decay. In the current study, the author conducted a series of storage tests with Marsh grapefruit grown on rough lemon rootstock. The fruit was fertilized with varying levels of nitrogen and potash and then stored at different temperatures. The results of the study showed that pitting was not significantly affected by nitrogen or potash fertilization except at 40°F. However, storage of the fruit at 50°F for 1 or 2 weeks before transferring it to 32°F eliminated most of the surface browning and the deep yellow color found in fruit stored continuously at 32°F. The study also found that decay in fruit stored continuously at 50°F or 32°F followed the same general pattern noted in previous years. Fruit stored at 50°F nearly always developed considerable decay during storage, while those at 32°F or 40°F showed a more rapid appearance of decay during the holding period. Less decay developed during the holding period when the fruit was stored for 1 or 2 weeks at 50°F before it was transferred to 32°F. The author concludes that the results of this study have important implications for the storage of Marsh grapefruit. By carefully controlling the storage temperature and using a short pre-storage period at 50°F, it is possible to significantly reduce pitting and decay and extend the storage life of the fruit.
