A very good, clean copy.First edition, rare. Girolamo Giuseppe Vincenzo Spanzotti was born in Turin… in 1741. After earning a degree in utroque iure in 1765 and being ordained in 1770, in the hope of securing a professorship, he published in quick succession the Juris ecclesiastici libri duo (Venice, 1769) and the Juris civilis liber singularis (Venice, 1770). In the first work, he analyzed Church doctrine, ecclesiastical discipline, and worship, directing some criticism at papal primacy. In the Juris civilis liber he expressed his general adherence to the principles of natural law. These works did not earn him the desired professorship, but they secured his election to the University's College of Advocates (1772). He later also published the De reipublicae utilitate ac commodis dissertationes (Turin, 1777), in which he contested the legitimacy of the right of resistance and identified religion as one of the foundations of political life. In the early 1790s, Spanzotti must have been among those enthusiastic about the developments in France, and in 1794 he was arrested shortly before the discovery of the Turin republican conspiracy. Spanzotti took an active part in Turin's political life after the flight of Carlo Emanuele IV and the establishment of the republican government in 1798. Spanzotti's major works, Disordini morali e politici della corte di Roma (Siena, 1798) and Tirannia (Turin, 1799), date from these years. In 1807, Spanzotti was removed from his position as university secretary and replaced by Gaetano Donaudi. He died in Turin in 1812 at the age of 71 (cf. G. Girolamo Giuseppe Vincenzo Sp…anzotti (Torino 1741-1812), di formazione giuridica, si dedicò alla vitas ecclesiastica e politica sposando posizioni gianseniste. Dal 1790 fu idealmente vicino alle istanze della Rivoluzione francese e Nel 1794, per ordine del primo segretario degli Interni, conte Pietro Giuseppe Graneri, fu arrestato poco prima della scoperta della congiura repubblicana torinese. Spanzotti prese parte attiva alla vita politica torinese dopo la fuga di Carlo Emanuele IV e l'instaurazione del governo repubblicano il 9 dicembre 1798. âAgli anni a cavallo tra i due secoli si datano le opere principali di Spanzotti, i Disordini morali e politici della corte di Roma, apparsi in una prima edizione anonima a Siena presso Luigi e Benedetto Bindi nel 1798 [. . .]. Nei Disordini, influenzati da Adalberto Radicati di Passerano e Febronio, Spanzotti criticava il potere temporale della Chiesa e la pretesa di infallibilità del papa a tutto vantaggio del potere dei vescovi; rimproverava inoltre gli abusi nell'uso della censura libraria, della scomunica e dell'inquisizione, per chiedere infine la convocazione di un concilio generale per la riforma della Chiesa. Il modello additato, in un'ottica esplicitamente anticoncordataria, era quello della costituzione civile del clero; Spanzotti propugnava in particolare l'elezione dei pastori e il controllo delle autorità politiche sulla disciplina della Chiesaâ (cfr. voce S. curata da Glauco Schettini in Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, volume 93, 2018). i Disordini furono riediti a Torino nel 1852, nel clima di anticlericalismo che fece seguito al fallimento della prima guerra di indipendenza e all'approvazione delle leggi Siccardi. Bernardino e il Cristo risorgente. SPANZOTTI (Casale Monferrato 1455 circa - Chivasso, ante 1528) fu un importante punto di riferimento per tutta l'arte piemontese dell'epoca. Camillo Olivetti acquistò il complesso (posto nelle immediate vicinanze della sua fabbrica di macchine per scrivere) nel 1910; Adriano Olivetti realizzò, tra il 1955 ed il 1958, un più importante progetto di riqualificazione dell'area, con il restauro guidato da Noemi Gabrielli. Ottimo esemplare.

Opera molto rara del sacerdote piemontese, "membro del Collegio di Legge dell'Università Nazionale", Gerolamo Spanzotti (1741-1821), figura di spicco del clero giansenista piemontese, divenuto fervente repubblicano; nello stesso periodo apparve presso il Fea anche l'altra sua opera più nota, La Tirannia dei Re smascherata. Lo Spanzotti appoggiò naturalmente la Costituzione Civile del Clero e le tesi dell'abate Grégoire a favore del Gallicanesimo. Su di lui e sulle sue opere cfr. Ruffini, I Giansenisti Piemontesi, pp. 108-13: "Il mite e sventurato Pio VI ebbe anch'egli il fatto suo, poichè i due volumi dei Disordini non sono che un interminabile sermone contro a lui e contro di lui diretto. Tutto il consueto arsenale episcopalistico vi è messo a profitto: il dominio temporale del Papa un'erronea pretensione; la sua infallibilità un ridicolo vanto; l'autorità dei vescovi non derivante dal Papa; questi non affatto superiore al Concilio ecumenico. Scioglimento delle corporazioni religiose, soppressione delle ricchezze del clero e del dominio temporale del Papa, riforma della disciplina ecclesiastica coll'autorità dell'istesso governo civile". Lo Spanzotti elenca poi dettagliatamente tutti mezzi di cui nella storia il Papato si è servito per rafforzare il suo potere temporale.

L'…edizione originale era apparsa nell'anno VII del calendario rivoluzionario (1799), con una dedica al governo provvisorio, tuttavia non si conosce nessun esemplare di questa edizione poiche' - come scrive l'A. - "la tirannia fece perire l'intera edizione". Esemplare di particolare interesse, perche' appartenuto allo storico Mario Gorino, la cui tesi di laurea, proprio su Gerolamo Spanzotti, si intitolava "Il giansenismo e Gerolamo Spanzotti". A questa fece poi seguito il saggio "Girolamo Vincenzo Spanzotti. Contributo alla storia del Giansenismo piemontese". A Gorino si deve peraltro la datazione della prima edizione della 'Tirannia dei re' e, infatti, in tal senso,Âsi collocano alcune sue annotazioni manoscritte presenti su questa copia a lui appartenuta. La seconda edizione dell'opera di Spanzotti si apre con un sonetto "Ai popoli liberi" e un accenno, in nota, all'uomo del secolo: Bonaparte. Spanzotti scrive quest'opera per "illuminare" la borghesia piu' colta e per combattere una lotta contro gli antichi pregiudizi, contro laÂtirannia dei re e principi, contro l'oppressione morale della Chiesa e dello Stato, contro il Capitalismo e persino contro chi non professava le idee della Filosofia dei Lumi.ÂÂGerolamo Spanzotti (1741-1812), sacerdote e avvocato collegiale, fu chiamato dai Francesi a far parte del Consiglio di Torino nel 1799 e poi fu segretario dell'Universita' durante gli anni napoleonici.
