OCLC (No. 7787375) locates only eight copies at institutions worldwide, most in Canada or the UK. ~HHH~ [1.5P] Autobiography of the premier smash and grab raider in 1920s-1930s, providing a detailed account of his life of crime. He practically invented the jewelry store smash and grab, using high powered cars to escape police pursuit. His crimes did much to bring about the formation of the Flying Squad to combat thieves using motor vehicles. His girlfriend, called by the Press 'the Bobbed Hair Bandit,' drove for him, and stitched his hands that had been badly cut while gathering up the spoils. Sparks, who was also nicknamed 'Rubberface' due to his expressions in police photos, became a prominent part of the London underworld scene. His criminal career was marked by numerous arrests and prison sentences, including a stint at Dartmoor prison where he led a riot. Eventually Ruby reformed, becoming an honest man who sold newspapers and sweets.
