Educated at King's School, Canterbury, before entering Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University, in 1645, Spencer obtained his doctorate in theology in 1665 and was elected head of Corpus Christi College, a post he held until his death in 1693. "De Legibus Hebraeorum", in which he develops the idea that Judaism is not the oldest religion in the world, is considered his major work and one of the first treatises on comparative religion. The work is divided into 3 books: Book One: On the Reason for Rites : What is the function of rites in ancient Judaism and their origin. Book two: of the Sabaean scabies, when Moses was sent as redeemer to the Hebrews, who were bending under the yoke of Egyptian servitude. Book Three: Tolerable nonsense: There remained, however, certain rites which God did not disdain to accept in his Law and in his worship. The original edition has a title in red and black. [1] leaf (Frontispiece), [20]pp (Title, Praefatio; Praefatio auctoris ad lectorem; Librorum, Capitum, & Sectionum Argumenta; Subscribers to Spencer), 635, [1]pp. (Vol. 1); [2], [636]-1232, [28]pp (Index) (Vol. 2). Modern full brown morocco with gold lettering to spines. Raised bands. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by George Vertue. Decorative head-, and tailpieces. Originally written in 1685, John Spencer's "De Legibus Hebraeorum" is a pioneer work of comparative religion, advancing the thesis that Judaism was not the earliest of mankind's religions. Spencer's chief purpose in writting this book was to prove in detail that the rites and ceremonies of the Jewish religion were instituted in direct opposition to the practices of the surrounding idolatrous nations, and in order to establish the strongest distinction between the Jews and them. In this work the author derived nearly all his data from classical writers of Greece and Rome, the Church Fathers, the works of Josephus, or from the Bible itself. Previous owner's bookplates on inside of each front cover (Library Brocket Hall; Francis Thomas de Grey Cowper - Panshanger). The pages are remarkably white and therefore appear to have been washed. Text in Latin. Binding and interior in very good condition. About the author: John Spencer (1630-1693) was an English clergyman and scholar, Master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

Hardcover. Condition: vg. Third edition. Quarto. [20], 1504, [82]pp. Original full vellum with gold-stamped lettering and borders on spine. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Ex-libris of Biblioth. Collegii Carol and ex-libris of Ducis Brunsvicensis et Luneburgensis at rear of front board. Illustrated woodcut vignette on title-page. Decorative initials, head- and tailpieces. 2 green ribbon markers. In his chief work, Spencer deserted the time-honoured paths traced by commentators, and 'may justly be said to have laid the foundations of the science of comparative religion. In its special subject, in spite of certain defects, it still remains by far the most important book on the religious antiquities of the Hebrews' (Robertson Smith, Religion of the Semites, 1894, Pref. p. vi). The remarkable nature of Spencer's achievement is enhanced when, it is remembered that oriental studies were then in their infancy, and that he was compelled to derive nearly all his data from classical writers of Greece and Rome, from the Christian fathers, the works of Josephus, or from the Bible itself. Spencer professed that his object was 'to clear the Deity from arbitrary and fantastic humour,' but it was inevitable that his orthodoxy should be questioned. 2 small scratches on front board. Minor age-toning on covers. Spine slightly soiled. Contemporary annotation at back of fly leaf. Some sporadic damp-staining on outer margin of pages (never affecting text). Text in Latin with some Hebrew. Binding in overall very good, interior in very good to near fine condition.
