Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good + to Very Good. First American Edition. First printing. Original price of $8.95 printed on dust jacket front flap. Jacket has a few short closed edge/corner tears now protected with paper backed polyester film. Book has no writing or marking, 254 pages.

Black paper-covered boards, red cloth-covered spine, gilt spine lettering, 8 1/2 x 5 5/8 inches, 254 pp., b/w photo illustrations. Book very good (mild patchy staining, edges of book block; stain, front free endpaper consistent with glue residue from a removed book plate). Dustjacket very good, not price-clipped, in an archival mylar cover. Leonard Shapiro: Solzhenitsyn's account (in Gulag) overwhelmed me in a way no other had done, with the exception of the prison diaries of Edward Kuznetsov. (K025).

Hardcover. 254 p., [2] leaves of plates: ill.; 22 cm. Occasional footnotes. Translation of Dnevniki. Introduction by Leonard Schapiro. A secretly kept daily account of Russian prison by a Jew who sought to escape from Russia and got caught. Condemned to death for such effrontery, his sentence was commuted to 15-years because of international protest. As carefully detailed and sensitive as Solzhenitsyn's accounts. Through diplomatic maneuvering, in 1979 Kuznetsov and Zalmanson were released from prison and allowed to leave the USSR. They immediately immigrated to Israel. He became a journalist; she a painter. Very good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on fep. First U.S. edition. Presumed first printing thus.
