Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Springer, Nick (map); Van Doren, Adam (jacket art); Scarbrough, Carl W. (jacket design); Capone, Mimi (author photograph) (illustrator). 1st Edition. As new condition red and white illustrated boards, blue cloth spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preliminary Page Quote by Henry James; Preface by Theodore K. Rabb; Foreword by Simon Winchester; Afterword; Glossary; Notes and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with twenty-three full color drawings by the author/artist plus illustrated front and rear endpapers. Two small repaired closed tears at lower front right jacket edge and upper front left spine edge. "The city of Venice has always provided an almost irresistible lure for both writers and artists. Henry James loved it, as did Ruskin, Browning, Pound, and Brodsky. For artists, it has been a compulsory magnet since the time of Bellini and Canaletto. By the nineteenth century there was hardly an artist of note - Whistler and Turner, Sargent and Predergast, Sickert and Bonington - who was not seduced by the city's charms, history, and aesthetic heritage. For the depiction of Venice by artists, it's a high bar that's been set, by Adam Van Doren, grandson of the Pulitizer-prize-winning poet Mark Van Doren, convincingly confronts the competition in this charming memoir, a verbal and visual account of his love affair with the city. His story is personal; like all other artists, he sees the city with and through his own eyes, but he is also well informed historically. He laces his tour with information, opinion, and citation. With Van Doren as guide, the reader's tour of the city is rich and convincing, filled with the presence of illustrious predecessors. With a thoughtful preface by the scholar Theodore K. Rabb, a charming foreword by Simon Winchester, twenty-three full-color drawings by the author/artist, and even six pages of commendably lucid notes, this is a book that will proudly take its place alongside the many others that have celebrated this city for centuries." - from the inner front jacket flap. "[Van Doren's] depictions of San Marco and the Grand Canal in Venice, architectural ruins, and boats on the Thames could double as illustrations for a Henry James tale of Americans abroad." - The New Yorker. "If I could paint like anybody, I'd love to be able to paint like Van Doren." - Graydon Carter. "Has there ever been a seductress quite like Venice? By her nature, her light, her complexion and her architecture, she conquers each of her suitors. Adam Van Doren is no exception. What makes An Artist in Venice exceptional is Van Doren's paintings and his words. Combined, they form a love letter to one of Humanity's most remarkable achievements." - Morley Safer. "[Van Doren] has such a gift for watercolors.with a bold wet look that still sits up on the page." - John Updike. "Venice is an ideal source, and metaphor, for Van Doren's art. Along its canals and alleys - which he has visited regularly since 1973 - colorful historic architecture and brilliant natural light intersect at dramatic angles with kaleidoscope effect." - Mark D. Mitchell, Assistant Curator of American Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book reconsiders the question of Martin Luther's relationship with Rome in all its sixteenth-century manifestations: the early-modern city he visited as a young man, the ancient republic and empire whose language and literature he loved, the Holy Roman Empire of which he was a subject, and the sacred seat of the papacy. It will appeal to scholars as well as lay readers, especially those interested in Rome, the reception of the classics in the Reformation, Luther studies, and early-modern history.Springer's methodology is primarily literary-critical, and he analyzes a variety of texts--prose and poetry--throughout the book. Some of these speak for themselves, while Springer examines others more closely to tease out their possible meanings. The author also situates relevant texts within their appropriate contexts, as the topics in the book are interdisciplinary. While many of Luther's references to Rome are negative, especially in his later writings, Springer argues that his attitude to the city in general was more complicated than has often been supposed. If Rome had not once been so dear to Luther, it is unlikely that his later animosity would have been so intense. Springer shows that Luther continued to be deeply fascinated by Rome until the end of his life and contends that what is often thought of as his pure hatred of Rome is better analyzed as a kind of love-hate relationship with the venerable city. This book offers a fresh reevaluation of Martin Luther's tempestuous relationship with Rome, the city he visited as a young Augustinian friar and never thereafter forgot. Luther's Rome, Rome's Luther will help readers see the ancient city, the long-lived empire, and the sacred home of the papacy from Luther's complicated perspective.
