Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Jack Spurling (illustrator). This is a second impression, first US printing, of The Best of Sail, by the British soldier, historian, sailor and author Basil Lubbock (1876-1944). It is a collection of 36 paintings of famous clipper ships, and accompanying historical notes, excerpted from the famous three-volume set, Sail: The Romance of the Clipper Ships, first published in 1927. The three-volume collected set was created from the original front cover illustrations created for the British magazine, Blue Peter, by the legendary maritime painter, Jack Spurling (1870-1933). The text includes the history of each ship, along with lore and legend, and is a treasure for those who value stories of the sea. This single volume is a selection of the 36 most significant ships featured in the original three-volume set. Each featured ship is portrayed in a full-color full-page illustration along with the original text provided by Lubbock. I attach photos of the contents. Note: the color of the paintings did not come out in the photos. 179 pages, no dust jacket. There is an inscription on the front endpaper (daughter to father). It is in mint condition.
