This woodcut print was created in around 1990, when Stan Dobbin was living at Newton Abbot in Devon. Stan created a series of woodcut prints at that time for use to illustrate a book of poetry by Conrish poet Jack Clemo centred around the Cornish clay mining industry. This was one of those prints and it is an artist's proof, quite likely that from which the book illustration was made. We do not know if other proofs were made or if so in what numbers. Stan Dobbin studied art from 1947-1952. After that, he taught at Newton Abbot and then Manchester school of art until his retirement in 1984. He was very influenced by the German Expressionists and the British neo-romantic school. He was an active member of the Manchester Fine Art Society. This print is from Dobbin's studio sale.
