Hardcover. Condition: Good. Samuel Stanesby (lithographs) (illustrator). Ex Library. Volume 2 of the 4 volume series. 1870 reprint with lithography by Stanesby. Magnificent red cloth hardcover boards with intricate stamped designs and scroll work in the High Victorian style; gilt lettering and gilt page edges; heavy stock paper. Binding tight with moderate wear to the board edges, pages dusty with light age toning; title page torn; x-library markings to the spine, library plates on the inside end pages; library block stamp with tiny holes stamped on the bottom of each lithograph. Very uncommon. Joseph Nash (1809 ? 1878) was an English watercolour painter and lithographer, specialising in historical buildings. His major work was the 4-volume Mansions of England in the Olden Time, originally published from 1839?49. For the work, Nash travelled across England drawing house interiors and exteriors. He concentrated on the architectural aspects of the buildings, which, using the example of Joseph Strutt, he brought to life with the inclusion of groups of people. The volumes were very popular, with the lithographs circulated widely by newspapers, architects and other artists. The book was so effective it was claimed in Parliament that it was causing an increasing number of people to visit historical buildings.

They were small books with every page chromolithographed, and highly decorated bindings,Ó (p. 134).
