Dr. Stanley graduated medical school and went to work at San Quentin as a prison doctor in 1913 and stayed until retirement in 1951. In this fascinating book of tales from prison, the author writes of the murderers, sex perverts, maniacs, thieves, and celebrities he encountered as chief surgeon of San Quentin. Case histories are woven into discussions of such serious topics as capital punishment and abortion, and such humorous sidelights as his popular "neurosis eradicator", a weird assortment of bottles filled with coloured water and wires running to nowhere. An entire chapter is devoted to a unique intervention with the notorious "Bluebeard" Watson, in which the wife killer explains how he felt while he murdered women. He was the commander of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) from 2003 to 2008, overseeing operations against al-Qaeda in Iraq. In 2009, he was appointed as the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan but resigned in 2010 after a controversial Rolling Stone article. McChrystal is known for pioneering counterinsurgency strategies and leading special operations forces. After retiring, he founded the McChrystal Group, a leadership consulting firm, and has authored several books on leadership and strategy.
