Condition: Very Good. For sale an original c.1724 cooper plate hand coloured antique map of Persia - the map's title, visible in the upper right cartouche, is "Carte de Perse, dressée pour l'usage du Roy. Par G. Delisle premier Géographe de S.M. de l'Academie Royale des Sciences" - "Map of Persia by De L'Ise" as a Sheet Map publ…ished in December 1724 (& his 1731 Atlas de Geographie). The map shows Africa as it was 300 years ago, when European colonies were still all largely small coastal trade towns, so the political regions are predominately local African States/Kingdoms, all divided with original hand colouring. It is viewed as one of the best maps of Persia in cartography, specially with the level of detail included. Cartographer: Guillaume De L'Isle, the first geographer to the King of France. Geographical Coverage: The map covers a vast region from the Crimea and the Sea of Azov in the north, south to the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and east as far as Kashmir and Kabul. This includes modern-day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, with adjacent parts of Russia, Pakistan, Turkey, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, and Arabia. Historical Significance: De L'Isle's map marked a significant advance in European cartographic knowledge of the region, notably The Caspian Sea - being the first to incorporate the most accurate data collected in 1721 & produce a truly representative map for a 1st time. It's extensive & detailed cartography covers details of towns, rivers, mountains, notes on peoples/regions, trading routes etc, quite interesting to read & think what life was like back then. And in the latter decades of the maps looking like pictures, compared to where we have moved today. Medium and Materials Printed in black on cream paper. Outline colour Page Size: 620mm x 490mm Condition: Very Good Plus - small patch of foxing in the province of Mecran, in Balochistan. ###I can certify this is an Original Antique Map - NOT a reproduction!### Postage in a solid cardboard tube across Australia with tracking. Or Personal Pickup from Coburg North, Victoria, Australia.Overseas postage available, but please message me first as eBay postage isn't that reliable. Starckman, P. (illustrator).
