Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm Long Playing (presumably mono) vinyl record, Radiola MR-1082, near-mint vinyl in a near-mint cardboard jacket, transcribing actual old-time dramatic radio broadcasts of 1947 and 1948. "The Fat Man" -- concept credited to Dashiell Hammett -- broadcast from the studios of WJZ Radio in Newark, New Jersey from 1946 to 1951, by which time television was making inroads. The Fat Man was developed by producer E.J. ("Mannie") Rosenberg and co-starred Ed Begley as Sgt. O'Hara. "The Adventures of the Thin Man" (1941-1950) were based on the William Powell-Myrna Loy films, which were in turn based, of course, on the 1934 novel by Dashiell Hammett. (Yes, times have changed, but for a man weighing 237 lbs. to be considered "really fat," how short would he have to be? Five-foot-four? New York's fattest congressman, Jerry Nadler, stands 5-foot-4 and peaked at 338 lbs. before resorting to surgery, which has reportedly now reduced him to a lithe 277.) This radio-theater LP now reduced (without surgery) from $21.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl record album, Radiola MR-1011, near-mint mono vinyl in a near-mint cardboard jacket with one banged corner, transcriptions of radio dramas from the 1950s, each appearing here for the first time on disc. (Interestingly enough, it's reported the FBI objected to "Mr. District Attorney" -- based on the early racket-busting career of New York Gov. Thomas Dewey -- when "the scripts reflected real life too closely." Wouldn't want to let the public know what's really going on!) In "The F.B.I.," veteran character actor William Blaine regularly played Field Agent Adam Sheppard, presumably in the days before the corrupt federal agency (never authorized or imagined in the Constitution) became the partisan, Never-Trump KGB of today's Marxist Democrats. Reduced from $15.

Paperback. Condition: New. An uproarious and "utterly charming" (The Washington Post) memoir by a mailman in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, who found that working for the post office saved his life, taught him who he was, gave him purpose, and educated him deeply about a country he loves but had lost touch with.Steve Grant was laid off in March of 2020. He was fifty and had cancer, so he needed health insurance, fast. Which is how he found himself a rural letter carrier in Appalachia, back in his old hometown. Suddenly, he was the guy with the goods, delivering dog food and respirators and lube and heirloom tomato seeds and Lord of the Rings replica swords. He transported chicken feed to grandmothers living alone in the mountains and forded a creek with a refrigerator on his back. But while he carried the mail, he also carried a whole lot more than just the mail, including a family legacy of rage and the anxiety of having lost his identity along with his corporate job. And yet, slowly, surrounded by a quirky but devoted band of letter carriers, working this different kind of job, Grant found himself becoming a different kind of person. He became a lifeline for lonely people, providing fleeting moments of human contact and the assurance that our government still cares. He embraced the thrill of tackling new challenges, the pride of contributing to something greater than himself, the joy of camaraderie, and the purpose found in working hard for his family and doing a small, good thing for his community. He even kindled a newfound faith. A brash and loving portrait of an all-American institution, Mailman offers a "warm and oddly patriotic" (The New York Times) look at both rural America and the dedicated (and eccentric) letter carriers who keep our lives running smoothly day to day. "A compelling and empathetic guide" (The Atlantic), Grant has written an irreverent, heartfelt, and often hilarious tribute to the simple heroism of daily service, the dignity and struggle of blue-collar work, the challenge and pleasure of coming home again after twenty-five years away, and the delight of going the extra mile for your neighbors, every day.
