This book is an analysis of the International Workingmen's Association (IWMA), the first international organization devoted to the cause of labor rights and the first to champion Marxist values of revolutionary socialism following the Communist Manifesto. The author describes the power struggle and ideological clashes that defined the IWMA from its founding in London in 1864 until the organization splintered in 1872 amid differences over the notion of political action. Supporters of the revolutionary anarchist Mikhail Bakunin favored abstention from political struggles and envisioned a loose confederation of autonomous trade unions coordinating a generalized strike to overthrow capitalism. Karl Marx and his followers, on the other hand, believed in a more centralized party-based strategy of participating in electoral politics to achieve a revolutionary transformation of society. This split was followed by the emergence of an anarchist-dominated anti-authoritarian International, signaling the end of the IWMA as a coherent force. However, this book argues that the legacy of these early debates and divisions within the IWMA laid the groundwork for the subsequent development of international socialist and anarchist currents. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
