The author, who enlisted into Company A, states in his introduction: "My desire has been to make this a record which I can leave behind me after I am gone, to those may come after me." The author includes entries from his daily diary, followed by vignettes of life in camp, on the march, and in battle. The 31st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was organized in October 1862, and it initially mustered in six companies at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The unit later expanded to include additional companies by December of that year. The regiment was assigned to various duties, including guarding rebel prisoners and patrolling key railroads like the Nashville & Chattanooga. It was part of the 4th Division, 20th Corps, and participated in significant campaigns across Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia. The 31st Wisconsin Infantry participated in three major engagements during the Civil War: the Atlanta Campaign, the Battle of Bentonville, and joined in Sherman's March to the Sea. The regiment saw extensive combat during these operations, particularly at Bentonville where it held an exposed front-line position and repulsed five determined Confederate charges.
