Slate gray cloth; some scuffing at spine ends and at tips of board corners. THE CRISIS OF THE OLD ORDER 1919-1933. Stated first printing. xiv, [2], 557 pages. H 22cm x L 14.75cm. Reddish-purple top edge;… personal bookplate of John C. Stennis on front free endpaper; blank United States Senate white memorandum stationery sheets laid-in between pages 4-5 and 116-117; top corners of pages 133-134, 183-184, and 245-248 creased from fold-downs; pencil marks on page 33; ink underlining and margin mark on page 195; ink notes on rear pastedown; no other ink/pencil markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal but might be present. Binding has a few stress points but still reasonably firm. THE COMING OF THE NEW DEAL. Book club reprint (per impressed dot at rear board's bottom right corner). xii, [2], 669 pages. H 21.75cm x L 14.75cm. Bookplate of John C. Stennis also on front free endpaper but with handwritten ink note at bottom with some overlap onto page "From Pam Syrul [?] - Jan. 1959 -" (unsure whether this is Stennis' handwriting). No underlining or marginalia readily apparent upon a quick perusal of interior pages. Blank United States Senate pink memorandum stationery sheet laid-in between pages 8-9. Binding is firm. Democrat stalwart Senator John C. Stennis of Mississippi served in the Senate for more than 41 years from November 17, 1947 to January 3, 1989 and was President pro tempore during the 100th Congress (1987-1989) and, at various times, chaired committees including Appropriations and Armed Services with his service on the latter leading to him being the namesake for the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. Acquired from a Starkville, Mississippi estate; I am unsure of how Stennis' books were disposed of after his passing in 1995 but a cousin's estate (in which some items of the Senator's were found despite vetting by the family) was auctioned in De Kalb, Mississippi in November 2002. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 5 pounds (2.26 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
