Originally published in 1948 by the Historic…al Division department of the army as part of its series United States Army in World War II: The War in the Pacific. First Tuttle edition was in 1960 this book is a 1971 Sixth Printing. On October 3, 1944, American forces in the Pacific Ocean areas were told to seize positions in the Ryukyu Islands. Okinawa is the most important island of this group, the threshold to the four main islands of Japan, and it thus became the scene of one of the most bitterly fought battles of the Pacific war. Operation ICEBERG marked the entrance of the United States and the execution of its strategy in the Pacific. It also marked the penetration by the United States of the inner ring of Japanese defenses and signalized Japan's coming defeat. This book is the record of that penetration and of the dearly bought victory that it achieved. It concerns a fiercely contested action in which the Army, the Marine Corps, and the Navy all played a vital part. It describes in vivid detail a campaign against a capably led Japanese army of greater strength than anticipated, over difficult terrain heavily and expertly fortified, and thousands of miles from home. It is, in short, a chronicle of heroic endeavor that brought to its climax the most savagely fought war in history. This book is the work of U.S. Army historians who participated in the Ryukyu campaign as members of that group. organized to accompany the American forces in this campaign and to secure at first hand the materials for a history of their operations. The book is illustrated with almost two hundred photographs and is generously provided with approximately fifty maps, many of them fold-outs, and appropriate tables and charts. The three appendices provide a list of the major tactical units of the Tenth Army in the Ryukyu campaign, a list of the Japanese 32nd Army units involved, and statistics concerning the campaign.

For the defense of Okinawa the Japanese abandoned the tactics of fighting the marines on the beach. Instead, they built a strong defensive ring of concentric circles around Shuri Castle, hoping to contain the invasion and then counterattack and throw the invaders back into the sea. Against these defenses the American advances would be measured in yards. The Battle for Okinawa would be the last fought in the war against Japan; it would also be the costliest in the loss of life and material. 13,000 soldiers, sailors and marines were killed and the Navy lost 36 ships sunk and 368 damaged. These losses would later make a forceful argument for the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan.
