Als Archäologe sind besonders seine Beiträge zur Limesforschung zur Anlage des Hohen Neuffens, (seine Thesen zur Entstehung der Burg waren sehr umstritten und hatten keinen Bestand) und der Ausgrabung der keltischen Heuneburg hervorzuheben. Sein Hauptwerk war die Inventarisierung der Kunst und Altertumsdenkmale: Herausgegeben in 4 Bänden von 1889 bis 1914 "Die Kunst- und Altertumsdenkmale im Königreich Württemberg." Zugute kam ihm dabei seine langjährige Arbeit an den Oberamtsbeschreibungen, teilweise noch unter der Regie seines Vaters.
