The study of art technology has gained importance in recent decades as a relevant source of information, not only for determining the material history of an art object, but also for contributing to cultural aspects concerning its creation and use: aesthetic, economic, social, religious, etc. Often the results of such investigations are carried out within a narrow discipline and are only made available within it. The success or failure of multidisciplinary approaches depends on the capacity to share information. But under what disciplinary aegis?This volume contains papers in either English or Spanish, with abstracts in both languages, which address these issues through case studies, paying special attention to methodology. Different types of art technological sources and the theory of source research are examined. While there is an emphasis on textual sources, which are the most widely available and relatively easy to understand, an extensive range of subjects is covered: Hispano-Islamic gilding techniques; mediaeval recipe books and Baroque painting treatises; precolonial and colonial Latin American pigments; industrial archives and patents; realia from the 18th and 19th centuries; audiovisual sources for contemporary art; and the importance as a source of laboratory analysis and reconstructions of historic recipes. Eine Ausstellung im Rahmen des Projekts "Virtuelles Kupferstichkabinett", ein Kooperationsprojekt des Herzog-Anton-Ulrich-Museums in Braunschweig und der Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel. Eine Auswahl der interessantesten Objekte der spätmittelalterlichen Druckgraphik der Herzog August Bibliothek, vorgestellt in ihrem Originalkontext: gedruckte Bilder - eingeklebt und eingebunden, blindgeprägt und gestempelt - aufbewahrt in Handschriften und Frühdrucken der Bibliothek. Die leitende Frage dabei ist: Wie und warum werden diese Bilder und Texte zusammengefügt? Die vorgestellten Objekte zeigen die Anfänge dieser Zusammenführung seit der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts. - Bilder und Texte haben früh zusammengefunden. Sowohl mit Handschriften als auch mit dem Buchdruck sind sie in Europa seit der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts eine besonders enge Verbindung eingegangen. Um dieses epochale Ereignis und die dabei experimentell erprobten Techniken zu veranschaulichen, präsentiert die Herzog August Bibliothek eine Sonderausstellung. Sie zeigt eine Serie von Werken aus eigenen Beständen, die beispielhaft das ganze Spektrum der druck- und satztechnischen Innovationskraft jener Epoche repräsentieren. Der Ausstellungsband stellt diese Experimente und frühen Entwicklungen der Zusammenführung gedruckter Bilder und Texte bis 1515 vor. - Der Zeitraum 1450 bis 1480 markiert die erste Episode, als Druckgraphik in relativ großen Mengen in Handschriften eingeklebt oder eingebunden wurde. Obwohl viele dieser Blätter später herausgetrennt wurden, zeigen die Exponate Beispiele, die sich noch in ihrem Originalkontext befinden. Ab Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts versuchte man auf verschiedene Weise, Druckgraphik auch mit gedrucktem Text zu kombinieren. So entstanden zunächst Bilder, die zusammen mit Texten aus einem Holzstock geschnitten wurden. Zur gleichen Zeit versuchte man Holzschnitte, Metallschnitte, hauptsächlich Kupferstiche, mit typographisch gedrucktem Text zu verbinden.
