In etwa 30 Jahren sind ca. 55 Bände in der Gesamtausgabe erschienen, die in Antiquariatskreisen den Beinamen "Der gelbe August" hat (wg. der einheitlich in gelb eingebundenen Bände). Die Übersetzungsleistung Schering gilt als umstritten, da er zum Teil "eigenmächtig und zensierend" in die Texte eingegriffen hat. Andererseits dokumentieren die Briefe, die Strindberg an Schering geschrieben hat, die Verdienste des Übersetzers, in dem dieser "ausufernde Geld- und Bücherwünsche bediente sowie Botendienste für den Dichter abarbeitete" (vgl. wikipedia).
