Map
22 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. A very attractive, well-worn map of the property of the Sturdevant's as portrayed located in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Transecting the property is the old abandoned canal, the railroad and the canal towpath. The location is adjacent to Wilkes-Barre Township and Hanover Township lines existing in the middle of Division Street. The map shows Old River Road. This is a premier transportation artifact for the area. It shows the abandoned canal bed and the proximate Pennsylvania Railroad tracks. The Alexander Estate and Reuben Downing properties are also shown. The canal was purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1857 which then built out through Pittsburgh. W. H. Sturdevant produced a Historical Atlas of Pennsylvania in 1894. He also produced an atlas of Wilkes-Barre in 1894. This map encompasses the canal, railroad and country road era of transportation in Pennsylvania, specifically Wilkes-Bare. Good condition with substantial patina some minor marginal tears and slight loss in the lower left not affecting the overall impact of the map.
