Durch die Funkenbildung zwischen den beiden Elektrodenoberflächen bilden sich örtlich begrenzte Bereiche mit hohen Temperaturen. Das Werkstückmaterial schmilzt und verdampft in diesem lokalen Bereich. Der größte Teil des geschmolzenen und verdampften Materials wird durch den dielektrischen Fluss in Form von Trümmerpartikeln aus dem Elektrodenzwischenraum abtransportiert. Das Werkstückmaterial schmilzt und verdampft in diesem lokalen Bereich. Der größte Teil des geschmolzenen und verdampften Materials wird durch den dielektrischen Fluss in Form von Trümmerpartikeln aus dem Elektrodenzwischenraum abtransportiert. Um eine übermäßige Erwärmung zu vermeiden, wird die elektrische Energie in Form von kurzen Impulsen zugeführt. Der Funke entsteht dort, wo der Spalt zwischen dem Werkzeug und der Werkstückoberfläche am kleinsten ist.
