This is an original autograph letter signed (ALS) by Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (1832-1905), the famous American children's author who wrote under the pen name "Susan Coolidge." She is best remembered for her classic, widely beloved 1872 novel What Katy Did, which was modeled on her own childhood and family. Letters signed with her given legal name (rather than her famous pseudonym) are excellent additions to collections of 19th-century American women writers. Writing from North East Harbor (a popular summer colony in Maine), Woolsey addresses a "Mrs. Loring"—likely the wife of Civil War Union General Charles Greely Loring. The letter is highly conversational and deeply sympathetic, as Woolsey has just learned of a string of "four months of misfortune" to hit the Loring family. She expresses shock that she hadn't heard of "General Loring's illness," an accident, "your nose, nor Bob's illness," especially since the last time she saw Mrs. Loring, she was "a vision of long hair and pearls and old brocade." Woolsey tells Mrs. Loring she would understand if she didn't want visitors unless it was "the Angel with the nepenthe cup to make you forget all you have suffered," but outlines her upcoming autumn travel plans through Bethlehem and Newport just in case she can visit. She playfully scolds Mrs. Loring for not having herself immortalized in a photograph or painting while in her beautiful costume before she supposedly injured her "pretty nose." It is a warm, witty, and charming piece of correspondence from a beloved author. Complete English Transcription North East Harbor August 30 My dear Mrs Loring I had never heard of General Loring's illness, nor [Reuter's?] accident, nor your nose, nor Bob's illness, nor anything else since I saw you last, a vision of long hair and pearls and old brocade; and I am appalled at the thought of how many things can happen in three months without the rumor of them coming to me. - I should think you would not want any one to come near you this autumn, unless it were the Angel with the nepenthe cup to make you forget all you have suffered; but if you really are so good, I shall look forward to a dear little scrap of a visit at the end of September. We stay here till the 15th, then we go to Bethlehem where Mrs. [Gurley?] and her brood have betaken themselves and after a while with them I shall come wandering Southward, with the fond hope that the [Evans?] may feel like leaving Newport right and early in October, as they did last year, and in the interval of waiting, I will come to you if you like as well as to Mrs Whitmore who has just written with the same kind suggestion. I do hope your pretty nose has not really suffered by the fall. Why - oh why, didn't you go the day after the reception, and be immortalized in your costume, and put forever beyond a peradventure at one of the prettiest moments of your life? Perhaps you did. Meanwhile I hope all is going well for a long time to make you forget this four months of misfortune. Please give my love to the General and the children and with my sister's kind regards added to my own, believe me Yours affectionately Sarah C. Woolsey. Signed by Author(s).…
