During World War II, The Rochambelles were the first women's unit integrated into an armoured division on the western front during World War II. A total of 51 women served in the First Company, 13th medical battalion of the French Second Armored Division from 1943 to 1945. Suzanne Massu was a major in the ambulance unit that served in Gen. Philippe Leclerc's Free French Second Armored Division in France and Germany. The unit served in Indochina from 1945 to 1946. She died in 1977. Puis elle gagne New York, où elle rencontre une étonnante Américaine, qui s'est mise en tête de former une unité sanitaire modèle de première ligne. Inculquer la discipline militaire à des jeunes femmes… du meilleur monde n'est pas une mince affaire, et ce récit nous vaut des pages savoureuses. Baptisé 'Rochambeau' en souvenir du compagnon de La Fayette, le groupe embarque sur le Pasteur. A Rabat, il est intégré à la 2e D.B. Les soldats de Leclerc appellent 'Rochambelles' ces ambulancières auxquelles se joignent d'autres françaises, réfugiées ou pieds-noirs.> Suzanne Massu, épouse du général Massu, est décédée en 1977. Elle était officier de la Légion d'honneur et titulaire de la Croix de Guerre avec quatre citations.
