Add to basketLeather Bound. Condition: Very Good. In Latin. 1608 first edition 'Coloniae Agrippinae sumptibus Bernardi Gualteri' (Cologne, Germany) 4 x 7 1/4 inches tall full leather bound, three raised bands to spine, [14], 672, [3] pp. Lacking original endpapers, but otherwise a complete copy. Covers have extremely mild edgewear. Faded con…temporaneous owner name to title page, which is soiled, especially to margins. Faded contemporaneous ink marginalia, mainly tic marks to the margins to a majority of pages, as well as a numbering of Sweerts's 80 listed sources. Scattered soiling and foxing. Otherwise, a very good copy of a scarce first edition of this important early compilation of epigraphs. ~LLL~ A compilation of epigraphs and inscriptions collected from across the European Christian world by Belgian historian and epigraphist Franz Sweerts (1567-1629), also known as Pierre Francois Sweerts (Latinized as Sweertius Franciscus). In this work, following in the footsteps of Nathan Chytraeus (1543-1598), who published in 1594 what was arguably the 'first world-corpus of classical inscriptions,' Sweerts, like Chytraeus, was only a compiler. Sweerts admits making free use of Chytraeus, Lorenz Schrader and Tobias Fendt, who are among the eighty authorities to whom he explicitly acknowledges his indebtedness in the first few pages of this book. Sweerts indicates that he put together this collection strictly for the pleasure of the reader. 'People who like only old inscriptions,' Sweerts says, 'can betake themselves to Apianus and Amantius, to Smetius and Scaliger, to Velserus and Groter and Justus Lipsius,' where, he adds, 'they will be lucky if they find anything as delightful as the inscriptions produced by contemporary composers.' [Translation from John Sparrow, 'Visible Words: A Study of Inscriptions In and As Books and Works of Art' (Cambridge University Press 1969), at p. 32.] A second and enlarged edition of Sweerts's 'Deliciae,' dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII, appeared in 1625. Sweerts also produced 'Epitaphia Ioco-Seria' (Cologne 1623, 1645) and 'Monumenta Sepulchralia et Inscriptiones Publicae Privatacque Ducatus Brabantiae' (Antwerp 1613). Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions or epigraphs as writing; it is the science of identifying graphemes, clarifying their meanings, classifying their uses according to dates and cultural contexts, and drawing conclusions about the writing and the writers.

Add to basketAmsterdam, Jan Janssonius, 1631. Folio. Contemp. hcalf. Raised bands. Compartments gilt with floral stamps. Titlelabel with gilt lettering. Repairs to spine ends and hinges. Marbled coverpapers. Covers a bit rubbed. Endpapers renewed. Engraved frontispiece title, engraved portrait. (24),(10) pp. and 110 fine engraved plates (67…to the first part, 43 to the second), depicting 560 plants, usually life-size. A few minor brownspots. Scarce early (the first 1612) edition of Sweert's famous Florilegium, at first intended to be both a catalogue for selling plants and bulps and a picture-book of plants, but the later editions (as here) became a true Florilegium for collectors and botanical scientists. The first part deals with bulbous species, and the second with species having "fibrous" roots (fibrosae radices). Thirty-three tulip heads are paraded in regular columns. The American contingent is represented by the sunflower, cactus, agave, pineapple and Canna. Sweerts and Johann Theodor de Bry were the first to establish the convention of portraying lower stem with bulb or root alongside severed upper stem and flower in order to reproduce the plant life-size on the page. "Sweert prepared his Florilegium as a guide of his available stock for the Frankfurt Fair of 1612. The plates, depicting some 560 bulbs and flowers, were from the Johann Theodore de Bry Florilegium which in turn was based on that by Pierre Vallet. His attractively depicted bulbs sparked their popularity, leading to 6 editions of the work between 1612 and 1647, and a demand which would later result in "Tulipomania". At the time of the fair Sweert was in the employ of Emperor Rudolf II as head of his gardens in Vienna. He borrowed freely from plates that had been published before, so that many of those that appeared in the Florilegium had been cultivated in the gardens of King Henry IV of France at the Louvre."
