Some staining in margins of page 4 and 5, discolored area from a newspaper clipping previously laid in on page 74, edge tear on page 89. Pages had deckle edges. Printed endpapers, hinges are intact but somewhat loose. Cover corners are bumped and worn. Spine ends are tattered. Gilt title and graphic on front cover and bright and sharp, slightly dulled on spine. No jacket or slipcase. Includes 10 photogravure plates (illustrations). Enigmatic imagery of odd eminating priest(ess) character w/conehead wear, viper wrapping around at feet; similar feminine figure with two entwined forked-tongue vermin. Patterned illustrated endpapers by Clarke in maroon. Antiquarian printed bookpate at half-title for Margaret Gimlin; intriguing montage imagery of humanity's development of writing through the ages. Frontispiece plate with captioned tissue guard: "Felise". Rough-cut deckled leaves very good, moderately toned; several leaves remain uncut and unopened. Bind good, square; hinges intact. Features eleven plates with blind-stamped borders, each with captioned tissue. Partial page imagery and decoration by Harry Clarke throughout. Near very good first edition of fine book craftsmanship.
