Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). The full title of the book is 'The Game According To Syd: The Theories and Teachings of' Baseball's Leading Innovator.' This is one of a good number of books that I've listed that were owned by and inscribed to George Plimpton. If you're not familiar with him, take a look at is Wikipedia profile, or better yet google ' In His League: Being George Plimpton', an excellent article published in The Nation. Suffice it to say he lived a fascinating life. The inscription is on the first front end paper and reads: 'To George, Sending you another work. You have made many significant contributions to our country. Thank you for your support, Syd Thrift.' Anyway that's my best guess on what he wrote. His handwriting is a little difficult. Take a look at the photo. Also, take a look at the photos of the covers. They are very clean. I don't see any wear at all, maybe a couple of tiny dents on the bottom edge. The page edges are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The book is square, not slanted, and very solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages appear to be free of any imperfections. I didn't see any soiling. There isn't any creasing or dogeared corners. No markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is in very good condition. It is very clean. There are no tears. No loss. There is little crinkling at the top edge of the spine. The spine itself is blue which is different from the green of the front cover, so I think some sunning alchemy has taken place. The flaps are in very good condition. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos have been scanned. "Baseball is badly in need of a research library and it is clear that Syd Thrift should be it's Oppenheimer, it's Wernher Von Braun." Roger Angell From the dust jacket's front flap: 'By no means am I the one with all the answers; I'm simply the one with all the questions. The most provocative question a person can ask is "Why?" And a close second is "Can you prove it to me?".'. Inscribed by Author(s).
