Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). The full title of the book is 'The Game According To Syd: The Theories and Teachings of' Baseball's Leading Innovator.' This is one of a good number of books that I've listed that were owned by and inscribed to George Plimpton. If you're not familiar with him, take a look at is Wikipedia profile, or better yet google ' In His League: Being George Plimpton', an excellent article published in The Nation. Suffice it to say he lived a fascinating life. The inscription is on the first front end paper and reads: 'To George, Sending you another work. You have made many significant contributions to our country. Thank you for your support, Syd Thrift.' Anyway that's my best guess on what he wrote. His handwriting is a little difficult. Take a look at the photo. Also, take a look at the photos of the covers. They are very clean. I don't see any wear at all, maybe a couple of tiny dents on the bottom edge. The page edges are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The book is square, not slanted, and very solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages appear to be free of any imperfections. I didn't see any soiling. There isn't any creasing or dogeared corners. No markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is in very good condition. It is very clean. There are no tears. No loss. There is little crinkling at the top edge of the spine. The spine itself is blue which is different from the green of the front cover, so I think some sunning alchemy has taken place. The flaps are in very good condition. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos have been scanned. "Baseball is badly in need of a research library and it is clear that Syd Thrift should be it's Oppenheimer, it's Wernher Von Braun." Roger Angell From the dust jacket's front flap: 'By no means am I the one with all the answers; I'm simply the one with all the questions. The most provocative question a person can ask is "Why?" And a close second is "Can you prove it to me?".'. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Printing [Stated]. 304 pages. Index. Some wear and discoloration to the dust jacket and covers. Sticker residue on the back of the dust jacket. This seminal sports book is co-authored by legendary Major League Baseball executive Syd Thrift, who was the architect of the successful Pittsburgh Pirates rebuilding as well as a vice-president for baseball operations for the Yankees. It offers a candid look into the front-office operations, player evaluation, and player development of the era, breaking down the sport into practical, on-field philosophies and organizational strategies. Sydnor W. Thrift Jr. (February 25, 1929 September 18, 2006) was an American scout and executive in Major League Baseball who served as the general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1985 to 1988, and the de facto general manager of the Baltimore Orioles from 1999 to 2002. During a 50-year career in professional baseball, he also spent time as a player, scout, or executive with the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, and Kansas City Royals. In March 1989, Thrift became the Yankees' vice president of baseball operations, signing a five-year contract.[7] In June, George Steinbrenner ordered Thrift and the scouts to stop traveling to evaluate talent as a cost-saving measure.[8] Thrift resigned from the Yankees on August 30. Thrift also served as a consultant to the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In 1990 he and sports writer Barry Shapiro wrote his autobiography, The Game According to Syd: The Theories and Teachings of Baseball's Leading Innovator. Derived from a Kirkus review: A breezy, against-the-grain appreciation of pro ball from an enthusiast who knows the score in the front office as well as on the field. Best known for the leading role he played (as general manager) in making a contender of the hapless Pittsburgh Pirates a couple of seasons back, Thrift is a well-traveled baseball executive and a genuine student of the game. A left-handed pitcher who never made it out of the minors, the author has (with time out to build a successful real-estate business) been in or around the major leagues since 1949. Employed at various times by the larger-than-life likes of Charles O. Finley and George M. Steinbrenner, Thrift spent a formative three-year period as founding director of the baseball academy established to polish diamond roughs for Ewing Kauffman's Kansas City Royals. In providing an episodic rundown on his own career, he sheds light on the many innovations he and his computer-using allies have made in workaday fundamentals in a tradition-minded sport. Cases in point range from the time-measured lead and four-seam fastball through conditioning/nutrition programs keyed to players' positions. Among other examples of how an investive approach can pay off, the author cites Kevin Mitchell; having discovered that the slugging outfielder's buttock and hip muscles were overly tight, a consultant put him on a regimen that helped get the San Francisco Giants into the 1989 World Series. Nor is Thrift overly impressed by strategy, "probably the most overrated part of the game." Of appreciably greater value to baseball, he insists, are knowledgeable, attentive analysts, instructors, scouts, and teachers. Trade secrets from a real pro with the wit to question conventional wisdom; a fine treat for baseball fans. Bruce Bennett (Author photograph) (illustrator).
