Paperback. Condition: New. Pham, Son La (illustrator). A Google search for a book on Vietnamese history will result in an overwhelming number about the war which ended in 1975. This book offers an overview of Vietnamese history from prehistory to the present day. It specifically focuses on the period from 700 to 111 BCE. It discusses the country's origins, the three characters which shaped its early history: the Hung kings, An Duong Vuong, Zhao Tuo and the battles involved during transfer of power from one to the next. The final battle ended the country's autonomy and placed the country under Chinese dynastic rule for one thousand years to the 10th century. It also tells the stories of the mythical Four Immortals, the bronze drums in the north, the earrings in the centre and south. It recounts the tragic love story of the Magic Crossbow, the 2200-year-old fort of Co Loa. It is written from a traveller's perspective and has 71 photographs, maps and diagrams. 242 pages.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. On a cold winter day3 January 1428the overall commander ofthe Ming forces in Giao Chi (northern Vietnam) led a column of senior officers, soldiers, and civilians out through the gate of Dong Quan (in modern Hanoi) tobegin their long journey back to southern China. Wang Tong, the commander, travelled by land, likely through Lang Son, while others followed the Red Riverdown to the East Sea, returning to Guangzhou by water.Across the Red River, Le Loi, the man who had successfullydriven the Ming occupiers from Dai Viet, stood quietly with his chiefsecretary, Nguyen Trai, as the long-awaited withdrawal unfolded. Le Loi wouldgo on to found the Later Le dynasty, which endured for nearly three centuries.Neither man could have foreseen that within five years, Le Loi would be dead, and barely a decade later, Nguyen Traitogether with three generations of hisfamilywould perish under the orders of Le Lois son. This volume, Volume 3C, continues from where Volume 3A: DaiViet and Champa: The Early Centuries The Dynasties of Dinh, Tien (Former) Le,Ly, and Tran ends. It recounts the intertwined stories of these two men andother figures who shaped two turbulent centuries in the histories of Dai Vietand Champa. The narrative opens with the final years of the Tran dynasty, including the tale of Princess Huyen Tran, who married a Cham king. Internaldivisions weakened the Tran, allowing Champa, under Che Bong Nga, to rise andrepeatedly sack Thang Long, the northern capital. Amid this turmoil, Ho Quy Lyseized power, deposed the Tran, and founded the Ho dynasty, expanding Dai Vietssouthern frontier to Quang Ngai. Claiming to restore legitimate rule, the Ming Empire invadedin 1406; by 1407, Ho Quy Ly and his sons were captured and taken to Beijing. The Ho dynasty was crushed, and the Ming imposed direct colonial rule, exploiting the land and suppressing resistance. Uprisings continued until Le Loi,a noble from Thanh Hoa, launched the Lam Son Rebellion in 1416, eventuallyexpelling the Ming and founding a new dynasty.Under Le Tu Thanh (King Le Thanh Tong), Le Lois grandson, DaiViet entered a golden age marked by administrative reform, intellectualrenewal, and territorial expansionmost notably the 1471 conquest of Champa, which dismantled the kingdom, and the 1479 campaign into Laos. Yet after Le TuThanhs death, the realm descended into factional strife and tyranny, leadingto the rise of the Mac dynasty and the end of the early phase of Later Le rule.In over two centuries that followed, Dai Viet becamedivideda fragmentation whose origins can be traced to the turbulent yearsafter Le Tu Thanhs death. This next chapter of division and rivalry will beexplored in Volume Four.Associate Professor Dr Nguyen Thi My Hanh of the HanoiNational University of Education reviewed the manuscript, and Hue-Tam Ho Tai,Professor of Sino-Vietnamese History emerita of Harvard University, commentedon the draft and wrote the foreword to the book. She wrote Not all wars tookplace on battlefields. Some happened on paper. Tan Pham has mined the copiouscorrespondence between Dai Viet and Ming China, some threatening, someconciliatory, over issues of dynastic legitimacy, tribute missions, preciouscommodities and disputed territory. Other conflicts took place within royalpalaces and harems. Included in the volume are portraits of emperors, both goodand bad, as well as of some significant historical figures. Alas, the lives and personal names of women, including royalones, seldom made it into the pages of dynastic histories.Tan Phams multi-volume history of Viet Nam is a labor oflove. Readers will be able to follow in the footsteps of emperors, officials, sold Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
