Hardcover. Condition: Very good-. First Edition. 16mo, [11]pp., extra-illustrated with nine samples of children's bookplates, three of which are partly hand-colored (as issued). Title page partly hand-colored. About very good in the publisher's dark red buckram, titled in gilt. Front inner hinge cracked, contemporary ownership signature on the verso of the front free endpaper, else clean and sound. A wonderful little book about bookplates designed for children, published by a small private press during the height of American private press book publishing. Teall, the author, was an artist and writer, who notably illustrated an 1897 edition of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark," among other works. As much a sales pitch as an artistic study, the book contains a brief essay promoting the concept of bookplates for children's books (intending to lure the child's endless energy away from scribbling in the book, but rather hinging the bookplate to the book themselves in an act of ownership, for example). At the end of the essay, Teall notes that he has personally designed and printed all nine of the samples included in the book. These all have a distinctly "Arts and Crafts" style, evocative of Roycroft and similar American decorative arts and private press firms of the period. Though retained by perhaps as many as two dozen libraries, the book is scarce in commerce. Arecent encounter with one of the most prominent and well-known American collectors of private press books from this era noted with some elation that he had not heard of this book, nor of the publisher.
