Only edition. Rare compilation of twenty paintings from the collection of the Museum for the Modern Art of the West of Moscow. Small cloth folder with brochure (text pages numbered 5-16). Tucked into the brochure are 20 postcard-sized reproductions of paintings from the collection of the Museum for the Modern Art of the West of Moscow, each with text by Ternovets on the reverse side. Paintings are by van Gogh, Cezanne, Derain, Marquet, Matisse, Degas, Signac, Gauguin, Cassat, Rousseau, Alix, and Vuilllard. All contents are in German. Translated from the Russian by Henriette Gayan. Number I appears on the title page; this refers to the volume being, per the back cover page of the brochure, the first volume in a series, Museen und Sammlungen in der Sowjetunion, edited by S. A. Abramow (S. A. Abramov). A large portfolio of works from this collection. Muzei Novogo Zapadnogo Iskusstva, was published by Ogiz-Izogiz in 1938, and is farily common, probably having been distributed at the time of the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair. This selection is on the other hand very rare; we have never come across it before. WorldCat shows three locations, all in US libraries. Ternovets waged an uphill and ultimately unsuccessful battle for the maintenance and recognition of the importance of the collection, the aesthetic of which ran counter to socialist realism. Now it is again one of the jewels of Russian museum collections. Good condition, text pamphlet browned, folder and contents bowed.
